Water trucking outskirts of kismayo
Access to clean and safe water remains a critical challenge for many vulnerable communities living on the outskirts of Kismayo. Prolonged drought conditions, displacement, and limited water infrastructure have left thousands of families at risk of waterborne diseases and severe water shortages.
In response to this urgent need, Humanity & Additional Special Needs Alliance Organization (HASNAO) implemented a water trucking intervention aimed at providing immediate, life-saving access to clean water for crisis-affected households.
Addressing an Urgent Humanitarian Need
Communities residing in peri-urban and displacement-affected areas around Kismayo often rely on unsafe water sources or travel long distances to collect water. This situation disproportionately affects women, children, older persons, and people with disabilities.
HASNAO’s water trucking activity was designed to:
- Ensure immediate access to safe drinking water
- Reduce health risks linked to contaminated water sources
- Support household hygiene and dignity during periods of water scarcity
Implementation and Community Engagement
The intervention involved the delivery of safe, treated water using water trucks to designated distribution points within targeted communities. HASNAO worked closely with local leaders and community committees to ensure fair distribution, prioritize the most vulnerable households, and manage water points effectively.
Community members were also sensitized on safe water handling and hygiene practices, helping to maximize the health impact of the intervention and reduce the spread of water-related diseases.
Impact on Vulnerable Households
Through this initiative, families were able to meet their daily water needs for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene. The availability of clean water eased the burden on women and children who are often responsible for water collection, allowing them more time for caregiving, education, and livelihood activities.
One community representative noted that the water trucking support “restored dignity and reduced daily hardship” for households struggling to cope with water shortages.
Commitment to Sustainable Solutions
While water trucking provides critical short-term relief, HASNAO recognizes the importance of long-term and sustainable WASH solutions. The organization continues to advocate for improved water infrastructure, durable water systems, and integrated WASH programming to strengthen community resilience in the long run.
Looking Ahead
HASNAO remains committed to supporting vulnerable communities in and around Kismayo through timely humanitarian assistance and sustainable development initiatives. Continued collaboration with partners and donors is essential to expand access to safe water and protect the health and well-being of affected populations.
Together, we can ensure that no community is left without access to clean and safe water.
